The Dior Cruise 2024 collection: Frida Kahlo and butterflies

One of our favorite fashion houses is Dior. That’s what we call immediately 🙂 The Italian designer Maria Grazia Chiura lists the contemporary collections of the French house an interesting twist. She makes a link between Monsieur Dior style, innovationbut also ancient craftsmanship. For the Dior Cruise 2024 collection presented in Mexico on Sunday (May 21), she collaborated with local artisans who specialize in the traditional weaving techniques and embroidery.

Mexico is aplace of the soul‘ for Chiuri, just as Mexico was for surrealist artists like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo, and for Tina Modotti who captured the landscapes and people of Mexico through her photographs. And not to forget Frida Kallo Naturally. It is this emblematic figure that Chiuri wants to celebrate with her Dior Cruise 2024 collection.

The Mexican artist transcended her body with all its limitations through her clothes, her appearance, her art. Chiuri wanted to symbolize Kahlo with a suggestive butterfly print. Butterflies also come to life in the silhouettes, as large charms on long necklaces and as a bow on a single dress.

Maria Grazia Chiuri was also inspired by photographs by Frida Kahlo herself. From the age of nineteen, the artist wore one three piece men’s suit. Among the many full skirts that are worn with a ‘huipil’, a traditional tunic, we see several trouser suits pass by. But in the collection we also see one pink dressas a bright spot in the black-cream color palette, reminiscent of a creation that Frida Kahlo wore in one of her self-portraits.

The materials in this collection range from different types of cotton, hemp, silk lace, jersey and velvet. Getting into the jacquards butterfly-like patterns back. As mentioned, black and cream colors predominate in this collection rich in beautiful details. Delicate red lace adorns the black velvet dresses. Other interesting details are the large embroidered collarsin shades of cream on black.

And then again and again butterflies that recur in everything and conjure up images to Frida Kahlo over and over again. But parrots, monkeys and strelizias from Frida Kahlo’s paintings also feature in this collection.
