Jasper Cillessen also defends NEC’s goal in the last two games. The goalkeeper of the team from Nijmegen is going through a difficult period and recently made a huge mistake several times. Trainer Rogier Meijer then decided to talk to the 65-time Orange international.
“That was a great conversation,” Meijer said in conversation with The Gelderlander. “I told him why I thought he made an insecure impression against Twente and we discussed how we can find a solution for that.” Cillessen made a nervous impression against Twente and already made big mistakes against Vitesse and sc Heerenveen in the second half of the season. However, that has no consequences for his spot under the crossbar, Meijer confirmed.

“I have not seriously considered passing Jasper. I still have confidence in his qualities. He is in a difficult phase, he has said so himself, and he has to get through it. The best medicine is to keep going You cannot convince someone with words that the uncertainty is gone, you have to show that on the field and Jasper will do that too”, Meijer expressed his confidence in his goalie.
NEC will play against AZ (home) and Fortuna Sittard (away) this season. The people of Nijmegen are still hoping for the play-offs for European football, but are already four points behind the coveted eighth place. Cillessen hopes to give his season a tail with the Dutch national team anyway. He is in the pre-selection of Orange for the final round of the Nations League. The same goes for Justin Bijlow, Bart Verbruggen and Mark Fleks.
