Napoli was crowned champion of Italy almost a month ago. It was the first national title since 1990 and that naturally caused a lot of excitement for the club and its supporters. Napoli would like to continue next season, but the question is currently whether success coach Luciano Spalletti will still be at the helm. The coach is considering leaving the national champion after the end of this season.
Napoli is undoubtedly the biggest revelation of this season. Although Spalletti’s formation was eliminated by AC Milan in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, it made a big impression in the billion dollar ball, especially before the winter break. Napoli sent Liverpool home with a big defeat and was 6-1 too strong for Ajax in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Last summer, the Neapolitans saw, among others, Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne and Kalidou Koulibaly leave, but Spalletti had nevertheless succeeded in getting a very strong team on the mat.

In recent months, it was no longer a question of if, but when Napoli would win the national title. In the home game against Salernitana on April 30, things went wrong, but a few days later the party was still able to erupt due to a draw at Udinese. During the festivities, several Napoli players shouted that they now want to go for the Champions League win. But it is therefore uncertain whether the success trainer will continue to work in Naples. According to Fabrizio Romano, Spalletti is seriously considering leaving Napoli after this season. It would be a ‘concrete possibility’. Not least because the club already has a list of potential successors ready.
If we are to believe Gianluca Di Marzio, Vincenzo Italiano, Gian Piero Gasperini, Thiago Motta, Rafael Benitez, Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann and Marcelo Gallardo are on that list. “The decision has been made, we are waiting to communicate it,” Spalletti said on Sunday after the meeting between Napoli and Internazionale. With this, the coach keeps Napoli’s supporters in suspense for a while. Spalletti was appointed head coach in July 2021. After a third place in his first season, he recently guided the club to its first national title since 1990. Napoli’s championship is undeniable. The lead on number two Juventus is no less than seventeen points with two rounds to go.
Star players also on their way to the exit?
Spalletti is in all probability not the only important pawn to leave Napoli after this season. The achievements of the club have of course not gone unnoticed. Several key players are associated with a top transfer. For example, striker Viktor Osimhen would have been in the spotlight of almost the entire European top, while defender Min-jae Kim is on the wish list of Manchester United, among others. Erik ten Hag would see him as a desired reinforcement for next season.
