What does metal music look like in sign language? You can find out now, because the metal band Metallica has had all songs from the latest album 72 Seasons translated into American Sign Language. The videos can be viewed on the band’s YouTube channel.
On April 15, 2023, National American Sign Language Day, the band showed the first video in American Sign Language (ASL) and with closed captions. The rest of the issues appeared at the end of April. Metallica is the first major band to do such a thing. For the videos, the band has collaborated with two major American organizations: the Deaf Professional Arts Network (D-PAN) and Amber G Productions.
Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing translators, music interpreters, sign dancers and performers have been deployed for the videos. The band hopes that fans from the deaf and hard of hearing community can enjoy the new album in this way, they say on their website.
