Incredible! Coach who shook city to its foundations may already have to leave

Luciano Spalletti made Napoli champion of Italy for the first time since 1990, the year of Maradona. Despite that historic achievement, the future of the coach in southern Italy looks very uncertain.

The two-time Serie A Trainer of the Year would no longer speak to Aurelio De Laurentiis, who may even have a replacement ready. Ex-coach Rafael Benitez would, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport be the dream successor of the controversial owner of Napoli.

After the title victory, the 64-year-old Spalletti would nevertheless have been offered a two-year contract with a significantly higher salary, but negotiations are difficult. The success coach would have opposed the departure of a number of absolute top players – including defender Kim Min-jae and top scorer Victor Osimhen – but De Laurentiis wants nothing to do with that. So the Spaniard Benitez seems a safer choice. Benitez previously coached the Neapolitans from 2013 to 2015 and won the cup in 2014.

It’s hard to imagine, though: a trainer who won a historic title with dazzling football, already kicking it out the door. And that is what seems to be happening to Spalletti at Napoli.
