Of course, with the Oranjes we have a lot of Dutch royals to keep an eye on. But on the other side of the world, a Dutchman also lives in a real sultan family. How are things going with Dennis Verbaas, the ‘ordinary boy’ from Lisse who hooked up with a Malaysian princess?
Date Dennis
Former footballer and model Dennis Verbaas from Lisse is now known as Dato Dennis Muhammad Abdullah, husband of Princess Tunku Tun Aminah Maomunah. The Dutchman did modeling in Asia for some time and then continued as a marketing manager at a Singaporean football club. As a result, he met the Malaysian royal. The Malaysian princess and the South Holland model got married in 2017, after Dennis had converted to Islam. Dennis did not become a prince through his marriage, but he did receive the noble title ‘Dato’. And that seems to work well!
We regularly see snapshots of Dennis and his Aminah on social media. Aminah’s father, the sultan of the Malaysian state of Johor, is very active on Instagram.
Within the palace walls
For example, we see Dato Dennis briefly passing by in the festive video that the Sultan uploaded after the Eid, standing to the right of his other family in the living room:
In case you didn’t spot the Dato so quickly: brother-in-law Tunku Idris Iskandar also shared a photo of the festive gathering:
And at the beginning of this month, the birthday of the son-in-law of the Sultan was briefly discussed:
Good stay
While we know little else about Dennis and Aminah’s life at the Malaysian court, a deep dive into the Instagram archives does offer a little insight. sneak peek behind the scenes. The two now have two children: the eldest daughter of the couple, Laylah Sofia, saw the light of day in early 2020, and the second sprout followed in April 2022.
In the photos above, we see snapshots of the youngest child’s traditional first haircut – an important milestone in Malaysian culture, celebrated in full family presence.
Furthermore, we can conclude from the endless snapshots of Dennis’ brothers-in-law Tunku Ismail, Tunku Idris, Tunku Abdul and Tunku Abu that life is good there at the court of Malaysia. We see a lot of fast cars, a lot of jet set shots, blue seas and lush palm trees gently swaying in the wind. From football player to model to manager to Dato: that Dennis has it all right!
