The ban on adding artificial trans fats to foods is said to have saved 1,200 lives in Denmark between 1991 and 2007. Fewer people died of cardiovascular disease, especially in disadvantaged groups.

“This is an excellent lesson: if governments set high standards for nutrition, it can have a huge impact on public health,” says public health and obesity researcher Gary Sacks of Melbourne’s Deakin University, who is not involved in the study.
