‘Can be a restart in their career’

Maarten Wijffels has in it General Journal wrote a piece about returning to the Netherlands as a football player. The football expert knows that football players who have played abroad in recent years would do well to make a new start in their career in the Netherlands. He advises PSV to look at the options available.

Wijffels starts by listing a few examples that took the same step backwards. “Jeffrey Bruma, Luuk de Jong, Marco van Ginkel, Davy Pröpper, Donyell Malen, Siem de Jong and Karim Rekik. And of course Xavi Simons, as the textbook example of how you hope it works as a club and player,” writes Wijffels, who sees that the players have one thing in common. “They were all at a crossroads in their careers and opted for a (r)entrance in their own country, while that was often not their most financially lucrative option on the transfer market.”

Danjuma and Kluivert
The football expert advises several players to make this step back to PSV. “Take Arnaut Danjuma, coincidentally ex-PSV. Now 26 years old and a permanent bench seat at Tottenham Hotspur, having previously lost his starting place at Villarreal. Or Justin Kluivert, 24 years old and has been wandering through Europe for years. He is doing well at Valencia this season, but with that club in danger of relegation in La Liga,” Wijffels writes.

Wijffels will come later with even more transfer suggestions. Sepp van den Berg, Noa Lang, Donny van de Beek, Joshua Zirkzee and Crycensio Summerville are mentioned by him, among others. “It is now mid-May. Let’s see who will play (again) in the Dutch top in mid-July. Whether or not on a rental basis, where they have put sporting prospects above money,” writes Wijffels.
