BT Group wants to slim down with the help of artificial intelligence

BT Group, Britain’s largest broadband and mobile operator, will cut 55,000 jobs by 2030, more than 40 per cent of its workforce.

The company is working on a transformation plan for the construction of a national fiber network under CEO Philip Jansen and the rollout of super-fast mobile 5G services.

The former state-owned company reported revenue growth for the first time in six years on Thursday, but costs are too high.

Jansen said that after the fiber roll-out is complete, artificial intelligence (AI) will allow for fewer staff to operate. ‘The new BT Group will be a leaner company with a brighter future’.

The total number of employees of the group would decrease from 130,000 to between 75,000 and 90,000 by fiscal year 2030 at the latest. About 30,000 of the current employees are contractors.

BT’s rival Vodafone announced earlier this week that it would cut 11,000 jobs worldwide.
