Brandon McNulty wins fifteenth stage Giro d’Italia, favorites for overall victory are once again barely moving

The fifteenth stage of the Giro d’Italia was previously called a ‘mini-Tour of Lombardy’. A course with three significant slopes. Suitable for classification riders, but also for strong escapees. A large group chose to attack early in the ride. Riders who were among them: Brandon McNulty, Ben Healy, Bauke Mollema, Marco Frigo, Laurens Huys and Einer Rubio. Until the last really tough climb, little happened in the leading group.

On the final climb it was a hit and Healy seemed to be by far the best after an attack. With his first start he left everyone behind, but just below the top McNulty came back strong and the American managed to bridge the gap in the descent. While the Italian Frigo was also not very far behind and also managed to return due to the dawdling at the front.

Attack Roglic

In the final phase, there was a climb of more than seven kilometers at more than seven percent. Nothing happened there in the early stages, but Healy attacked five hundred meters from the top. McNulty was in excellent shape, but Frigo was unable to answer the Irishman’s attack. In the final kilometer Frigo managed to return once again and went on and on. He came very close, but had to acknowledge his superior in his two breakaway companions, of which McNulty was the fastest.

For a long time, very little happened among the classification riders, but Roglic and Almeida accelerated once on the final climb. Not 100 percent, but definitely 90 percent. That caused some separation, but it did not lead to significant differences. The most important news: leader Bruno Armirail lost half a minute to the favorites for the overall victory.
