Analysts hard for ‘choking’ Arsenal and find reason for biggest disappointment ever: “Look at Kevin De Bruyne”

Arsenal had big title dreams. The Gunners were still eight points ahead of Manchester City at the beginning of April, but saw that lead shrink like snow in the sun. The analysts are painfully harsh on Mikel Arteta’s team.

City became champions yesterday without playing themselves. And that’s pretty much the common thread of the past month and a half, in which Arsenal could only win twice and City won all eight games.

“The last few weeks have been very difficult for Arsenal and I think it has to do with the mentality,” said Gary Neville at Sky Sports. “I think there is really a case of giving away the title here, especially when you look at the way they have lost their points: games where they gave away a lead.

“If you want to be champions, you have to deliver at the biggest moments, when the pressure is the highest. That’s where I’ve always had my doubts about this Arsenal team,” said Neville.

Top players can’t play everything

Jamie Carragher agrees with him. “One of the main reasons for this is the breadth of the selection. They have to get more quality players,” says Carragher. “Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard have played every game this season, but your top players can’t play everything. Look at Kevin De Bruyne at City. He gets some rest now and then and is perhaps the best Premier League player of the last four to five years.”

“How many times are Arsenal going to be in a position where they are eight points clear with ten rounds to go? It was an incredible position and they blew it, we can’t deny that. They’ve had a great season but I would be very surprised if they find themselves in a situation like that again next season with a team like Manchester City as a competitor.”
